2 arrested in beating of teen
Attack occurred at Kingsville party
From staff reports
Kleberg County Sheriff's deputies arrested two men Friday in connection with the near-fatal beating of a 19-year-old Kingsville man at a Ricardo party that drew more than 200 people, many of them H.M. King High School students, Channel 6 reported.
Ricardo Mateo Garcia, who graduated from H.M. King High School last year, was listed in stable condition Friday at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, where he been in critical condition after the beating, hospital officials said.
Yolanda Garcia said her son was beaten after trying to break up a fight involving his brother Alfredo Garcia.
"He just threw himself on top of Alfredo so they would stop beating on him," she told Channel 6. "He kept saying stop hurting him, he's my brother, leave him alone."
Garcia's brother Alfredo was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.
Joel Ramirez, 17, and Joe Moreno, 18, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and are being held in the Kleberg County Jail on $10,000 bond each, jail officials said.
Jose Ramirez, 21, was arrested on suspicion of furnishing alcohol to minors and is being held on $500 bail.
Sheriff Tony Gonzalez said authorities believe Jose Ramirez provided the alcohol for the party. Gonzalez said he expects to arrest two more men whom police believe took part in the beating.
"That's just the start," he said.
Gonzalez said an investigation into the attack is continuing and additional arrests are likely.
Garcia's mother said the men who are accused in the beating played football with her son at H.M. King High School last year.
"I don't understand how they could beat him over and over and leave him there to die," Garcia's mother told Channel 6.
"They all played football with him in school; they were supposed to be his friends."
Garcia was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg in Kingsville before being airlifted to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, sheriff's department officials said.
Gonzalez said the party apparently originated as a small get-together but quickly grew out of control.
He said many of the partygoers' parents were called to retrieve their children.
"The parents were able to see firsthand what had happened," he said.
