Freret named Islanders women's golf coach
Tuloso-Midway softball player Smith to sign letter of intent to play for Islanders squad
From staff and correspondent reports
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi named Ian Freret as its women's golf coach Monday.
Freret has no coaching experience, spending the last year as the Vince Gill Tennessee PGA Junior Tour director and assistant junior golf director for the Tennessee Golf Foundation. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1997, where he was a member of the golf team.
Freret replaces Brian Loeffler, who resigned in February.
"We were sorry to see Brian leave, but I'm excited about Ian accepting this opportunity," A&M-Corpus Christi athletic director Dan Viola said. "Although young, he has demonstrated the type of experience which should help our women's golf program here at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi."
Freret will be thrown into the fire immediately, guiding the Islanders at the Sam Houston Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to coach and continue the building process at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi," Freret said. "I understand we are taking small steps right now. However, with continued hard work and some luck, winning can turn into a reality."
Tuloso-Midway's Smith to sign with Islander softball
Tuloso-Midway High School softball player Leah Smith will sign a national letter of intent today to play at A&M-Corpus Christi, T-M coach Ronnie Fair said.
Smith was a first-team All-Metro and All-South Texas utility selection by the Caller-Times a year ago. In 1999, she batted .593 with 24 runs batted in, five doubles, five triples and a home run. Smith also compiled an 8-6 record with a 1.48 earned-run average, striking out 91 in 86 innings for the Cherokees.
Smith also has been a first-team All-District 31-4A pick during her high school career.
Port Aransas' Fiedler set
to participate in nationals
Port Aransas High School junior basketball player Matt Fiedler has been selected to play in the USA Junior National Championship Sports Festival in Madison, Wis., on July 10-16.
Fiedler earned his spot through competition at the junior national all-state competition earlier.
The TABC first-team all-state selection also was a first-team All-South Texas pick by the Caller-Times. He scored an average of 23 points per game for the Marlins, averaging 8.3 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game.
