Scorpions strike back at 'Rays, 6-1
New Mexico avoids 2-0 series hole with victory

SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico's Randy Murphy scored two goals Monday as the Scorpions defeated Corpus Christi, 6-1, in Game 2 of the Western Professional Hockey League President's Cup quarterfinals.
With the win, New Mexico evened the best-of-five series, 1-1. Corpus Christi won the first contest, 7-6 in overtime, Saturday night. The third game of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Coliseum, while Game 4 is scheduled for the same time and place on Friday.
The IceRays can advance to the league semifinals if they win Games 3 and 4.
If necessary, Game 5 will return to the 1,200-seat community center in Santa Fe. The Scorpions can not host games on their home ice in Albuquerque's Tingley Coliseum because of a scheduling conflict.
Like it did in Game 1, New Mexico took a three-goal lead into the third period, prompting IceRays coach Taylor Hall to counter with a with a goalie change, as he did Saturday. Corpus Christi goalie Eddy Skazyk, who gave up four goals in 40 minutes, was pulled before the start of the third period and Hall gave Jason Genik an opportunity in net.
Genik shut out the Scorpions in third period and overtime of Game 1 while his teammates scored three goals to force overtime before Dustin McArthur won the game in the extra session.
Unlike the first meeting, however, Genik gave up two goals and Corpus Christi failed to score another goal. New Mexico led, 4-1, after two period and added two more in the third period, including one by Murphy, who has three in the series. Also like the first game, the Scorpions scored first Monday. Former IceRays forward Tyler Boucher, who did not play in Game 1, gave New Mexico a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 13:40 into the game. The Scorpions then took a brief 2-0 lead on a Jeff Goldie 3:48 into the second period.
The IceRays answered with their first goal 31 seconds later. Andy Ross scored his fourth playoff goal, unassisted, at the 4:19 of the second period to cut the New Mexico lead to 2-1. The Scorpions went back up by two goals, 3-1, 7:24 into the second period off Jason Glover's first playoff goal. Late in the second period, Murphy scored to give New Mexico a 4-1 lead.

A PLAYOFF LEADERS: IceRays Kurt Wickenheiser and Tobin Praznik lead the WPHL in playoff scoring with nine points each. Wickenheiser leads in goals scored with six and hat tricks with two.
