City lends its ears if public will speak
Hearings begin today on bond, tax proposals
By Jonathan Osborne Caller-Times
The city of Corpus Christi will hold a series of public hearings beginning today to discuss the city's proposed 2000 bond issue and the one-eighth cent sales tax proposal for economic development.
"The council has really tried to put the best package together that they can," City Manager David Garcia said. "The City Council would like public comment on that."
The schedule for the public hearings is as follows:
Today, 6 p.m., City Hall, 1201 Leopard St.
April 12, 6 p.m., Northwest Senior Center, 9725 Up River Road
April 26, 6 p.m., Grant Middle School, 4350 Aaron Drive
May 17, 6 p.m., Flour Bluff High School, 2505 Waldron Road
May 22, 6 p.m., Bayfront Plaza Convention Center, Room 224.
"(The public) can go to any of them," Garcia said. "We tried to situate these meetings so they're convenient for people."
Councilman Mark Scott said he wants to get a feel for the public's opinion on the package.
"Nothing's in stone," Scott said. "We haven't made any final decisions. What I'm looking for is public input. Do they like what they're hearing? Will they support it? This is a genuine effort to get public participation in the process."
The City Council also will meet at noon today in the basement training room of City Hall to discuss the format for presenting the bond package.
