Drews pitches A&M-CC softball team to 5-0 shutout of Centenary
From staff and correspondent reports
SHREVEPORT, La. - Melanie Drews went the distance on a five-hitter en route to notching her first collegiate shutout as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi blanked Centenary 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out.
The Islanders, who tallied their third consecutive victory, knocked across one run in each of the first three innings to grab the early lead and tacked on two runs in the sixth for insurance. Christen Cook and Rachel Mendez each registered two hits apiece, while Kesty Meitner and Shelley Oetken each drilled their second homers of the year in the second and sixth innings, respectively.
Janelle Sanders gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a triple to left-center, which plated Mendez. That run turned out to be enough for Drews, who improved to 5-9 on the season. The freshman yielded two walks while striking out three batters to win her second straight decision.
A&M-Corpus Christi, now 11-28-1, will return to action today as it plays Louisiana Tech in a doubleheader in Ruston.

A ST. EDWARD'S 14, A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 11: St. Edward's pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth to post a come-from-behind victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Cabaniss Field.
The Hilltoppers, now 16-12 on the year, trailed 11-10 heading into the last three innings. After tying the game in the seventh on a wild pitch, St. Edward's pieced together three hits in the three-run eighth. Juan Garcia, the designated hitter, gave the Toppers the lead for good with a two-run single. He finished the game with a 3 for 5 effort and drove in 4 runs, while teammate Stephen Poe went 5 for 6 with a homer and 3 RBI. Poe finished a triple short of the cycle.
A&M-Corpus Christi, which fell to 15-21, battled back from a 10-5 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning, by plating six runs. Junior Ryan Clyde highlighted the scoring outburst by blasting his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot over the leftfield fence off reliever Chris Baron to give the Islanders the lead at 11-10.
St. Edward's got things started early in the first two innings by jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead. Garcia's two-run single sent Islander starter Shawn Morgan to the showers. The junior surrendered five hits and four earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to action today as it hosts Tarleton State in a single game beginning at 10 a.m. The Islanders will then host St. Edward's at 4 p.m.
