Javelinas softball team sweeps doubleheader

KINGSVILLE - Sheila Dotson hit a two-run home run that produced the winning runs as Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Eastern New Mexico, 2-1, in the second game of a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader sweep Friday.
The 25th-ranked Javelinas hammered 12 hits as they won the opening game, 9-0, in five innings.
The sweep gives the 26-10 Javelinas sole possession of first place in the LSC South with a 2-0 record. Each of the other four schools has at least two losses.
Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. In the bottom of the second, Tracy Guadarrama walked to open the inning before Dotson homered.
The Javelinas had only four hits and two of these were by Dotson, who also singled. Amanda Sustaita had a double for the Javs.
Pitcher Maria Gutierrez (18-7) gave up eight hits and one earned run in the seven innings. She walked none and struck out four, giving her 154 strikeouts for the year.
Gutierrez was also the winner in the first game, throwing the first two innings. She gave up one hit and no runs, and had three strikeouts. Amanda Reed piched the final three innings and allowed one hit.
The Javelinas scored eight runs in the bottom of the second. Four Javelinas had multiple hits. Sustaita went 2 for 2 and Liana Flores, Tiffany Gates and Jennifer Moffett all were 2 for 3. Moffett had a double.
The Zias fell to 20-20 and 2-4 in conference play.
The same schools will meet in a doubleheader today beginning at noon.

KINGSVILLE - Adrian Rosales doubled home the eventual winning run as Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Tarleton State, 5-4, in the second game of a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader Friday night at Nolan Ryan Field.
Tarleton had rallied in the seventh inning to win the opener, 6-3.
The teams will meet in another doubleheader today beginning at noon.
The score was tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Denzil Davis led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner B.J. Griffith made it to third on two groundouts before Rosales came through with his double to break the tie.
Mike Adams pitched the seven innings for the Javelinas, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He walked five and struck out 10.
The Javelinas had 12 hits and were led by Davis' 3-for-3 performance. Hector DeLeon was 2 for 3 with a home run. John Dean went 2 for 4.
In the opener, the score was tied at 3 heading into the seventh when Tarleton State scored three times, twice with two out.
Lavelle Morgan started for the Javelinas and was relieved in the sixth by Rosales, who was pinned with the loss.
Five Javelinas had singles.
The Javelinas are 3-3 in the LSC and Tarleton State is 4-2. A&M-Kingsville is 15-25 overall while TSU is 22-13.
