Victoria 31, Kingsville 21
By Stu Duncan Caller-Times
VICTORIA - Catch him if you can.
It wasn't a fun game to play Thursday night for Kingsville Brahmas' defenders attempting to run down Victoria's fleet-footed running back Bo Mallette.
Mallette gave the Brahmas fits with his elusive cutback ability, stiff-arming talents and speed.
Mallette ran for 182 yards on 21 carries, had three touchdowns and was the catalyst to the Stingarees' scoring 28 straight points. Victoria (3-1) overcame a 14-3 second-quarter deficit against Kingsville (1-2) to prevail, 31-21, Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
After a holding penalty negated Mallette's 54 TD run, the Stings threw a screen pass to Mallette on third and 11 and he picked up 15 yards for a first down. Mallette scooted 24 yards on the next play, and after a personal foul on Kingsville's defense, he muscled into the end zone from eight yards to pull the Stinagrees closer. Stings kicker Terry Derrick added the extra point to cut the deficit to 14-10.
Stingarees' defensive back Roeshawd Bryant intercepted Brahmas quarterback David Esquivel's pass on the next possession to set up Victoria's offense again at its own 45.
Four plays later, Stings quarterback Tommy Cook, who missed last week's game because of a sprained ankle, threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Jermaine Battles to help the Stings to reclaim the lead, 17-14.
The Brahmas scored two second quarter touchdowns in a 1:07 span, to forge ahead 14-3.
Kingsville quarterback David Esquivel put the Brahmas on the board with a nifty option run to the right that covered 20 yards on 3rd and 11. Gil Castaneda kicked the extra point to give Kingsville its first lead, 7-3 just 12 seconds into the second quarter.
Esquivel - who added a 13 TD run late in the fourth quarter - connected with wide receiver David Kuti on the next play for a 32-yard TD pass play, giving Kingsville a 14-3 advantage.
That would be short lived as Victoria responded with two touchdowns of their own in a 2:45 span.
