'Rays may play preseason set vs. Lake Charles
By Mark Button Caller-Times
There won't be nearly as much on the line, but the Corpus Christi IceRays may get a two-game rematch against Lake Charles 10 days before the 1999-2000 Western Professional Hockey League season begins.
The IceRays have contacted the WPHL and requested a two-game series against the Ice Pirates, the team that kicked Corpus Christi out of the playoffs last season, three games to one, in a best-of-five series.
The series would be played at Memorial Coliseum, with the first game at 6 p.m. on Oct. 3 and the second game at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5.
"We're working things out with Lake Charles now," said Bill Davidson, IceRays general manager. "We want to bring the Corpus Christi fans a couple more games."
Steve Cherwonak, league director of scheduling and media services, said the "the series is tentative at this point, pending league approval."
All 18 WPHL teams have until Sept. 10 to request preseason games. The list of approved games should be released Sept. 13, Cherwonak said.
Tom Hoefer, the Lake Charles director of media services and public relations, said the Ice Pirates are hopeful the series is approved.
"Yes, plans are definitely in the works," Hoefer said.
