IceRays take Brahmas, 4-3
From staff and correspondent reports
FORT WORTH - Corpus Christi scored twice against Fort Worth in the final 3:01 of regulation to rally from a two-goal deficit and went on to defeat the Brahmas, 4-3, in a shootout Saturday at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
IceRays forward Kurt Wickenheiser notched the game-winner in the extra session, his third game-winning goal of the year. Corpus Christi improved to 6-2-1 and goalie Jason Genik improved his record to 2-2.
Fort Worth (6-0-1) led, 3-1, late in the third period when goals by Geoff Bumstead and Alain Savage sent the game to overtime. Savage's goal came with one second remaining in regulation.
Eight of the 10 meetings between the two Western Professional Hockey League Central Division rivals have finished in a shootout, including both games this season.
The game was Corpus Christi's first road contest of the year and the second straight overtime victory. The IceRays return to Memorial Coliseum Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. game against New Mexico.
Fort Worth goalie Steve Plouffe, along with the Brahmas, suffered his first defeat of the season. Fort Worth was the last undefeated team remaining in the WPHL.
Fort Worth scored first when Mike Sanderson scored 12:36 into the game to put the Brahmas ahead, 1-0. Sanderson's goal, assisted by Ian Larocque and Jon Olofson, was the only goal in the first period. Sanderson scored the game-winner in overtime in first meeting between the two WPHL Central Division rivals this season. IceRays rookie forward Dave Gilmore tied the game 3:43 into the second period. Assisted by a drop pass from forward Brent Hoiness, Gilmore's goal was his seventh of the season.
Gilmore's goal concluded the scoring in the second period, not that the IceRays didn't have a chance to take the lead before the second intermission. Corpus Christi's power play failed late in the period when the IceRays had a two-minute, five-on-three advantage but did not score.
Jason Disher put the Brahmas ahead, 2-1, 8:57 into the third period with his second goal of the year, both of which have come against the IceRays.
Martin Fillion added a goal for Fort Worth with his second goal of the season 14:20 into the third period.
Bumstead scored his fourth goal of the year, a power-play goal, with 3:01 to play to give Savage a chance to send the game to overtime with his last-second goal.
