HOWELL
Linden Heck Howell died on Saturday, October 23, 1999 in Key West, Florida. She was born in the newly built Midland Memorial Hospital on January 3, 1953, attended public schools in Midland and was graduated from Lee High School in 1971. She was one of 33 Honor Graduates in that class and participated in many extra curricular activities. She earned speech and debate letters, three academic letters, and was editor-in-chief of the Rebel Lee yearbook. She was a Charter Pickwick Player at Midland Community Theatre. Other honors included the National Honor Society and the Latin Honor Society, Girls' State, and National Merit Commended Student, and American High School Who's Who.
In 1975 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in government from Texas Tech University and in 1979 a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas. While attending law school, she worked part-time for the Republican Party of Texas- the beginning of her extended career in politics. In 1979, she became Executive Director of the Nevada Republican Party and remained in that position through the 1980 Reagan-Bush presidential campaign. In 1981 she joined Nevada Senator Paul Laxalt's staff in Washington, D.C. as an administrative aide with the Senate Judiciary Committee. Two years later she joined the staff of Texas Senator John Tower as his Legislative Director. In 1983, she was the political director for the Republican National Committee, the first woman to hold that position. During the 1984 Reagan-Bush campaign, Senator Tower appointed her as campaign director for the State of Texas. After the '84 election, she worked for a short period in the Department of Labor and then left government service for the private sector. While in Washington, D.C., she was an active member of the Junior League.
In 1986-1987 she was the Executive Director of the Center for Office Technology, a consortium to provide information and education regarding new technology in the workplace. In 1988, she returned briefly to politics to manage the campaign of Congresswoman Barbara Vucanovich of the Northern District of Nevada. She then became Vice President of Operations for E.R.I., an environmental research firm in New York. She continued in that job until she married J. William Howell, an executive with IBM. They lived in Annapolis, Maryland until they were transferred to Tokyo. After four years in Japan, they formed Howell Associates to work with IBM and other corporate clients in Hanoi who were reentering that country after trade relations with that country were resumed.
In 1995 they returned to the U.S. and established their home in Portland, Texas. They enjoyed living back in Texas near much of their family, and they loved living on the Gulf coast because her husband Bill Howell had been a 'blue water' sailor since his youth. In the bay area she was active in the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church of Corpus Christi, and she had been an active member of the Pi Beta Phi Alumni.
Linden's interests were manifold and she adapted easily to each new environment in which she lived. In Tokyo, she was Show Chairman of the prestigious Japanese Print Show, sponsored by College Women of Japan. She became a fan of sumo, and she learned to speak Japanese. In Hanoi, she supervised the construction of the first new housing to be built to Western standards in Hanoi, having lived in the hotel Metropole for the first nine months of their stay. The Far East fascinated her and she became a student of oriental fine arts, especially ceramics, fabrics, florals and Japanese lore.
Upon her return from the Far East, she became Vice-President and General Counsel for Heck Exploration Company, Inc., of Midland, Texas.
Though she had effectively left politics far behind, she still retained the responsibility of civic duty. She was appointed to the Texas Commission on Humanities by Governor George Bush, and had just accepted nomination to a third term as Chairman.
Through her husband's love of 'blue water' sailing, she developed her own love of sailing-and she lovingly polished, scraped and painted their acquisition "Wavedancer". She became an expert navigator using all of the newest technology.
While "Wavedancer" was docked in Key West, a pulmonary embolism took her life, a life that had so much more potential yet to offer. Her death was a great tragedy, softened only by the wonderful memories of the past. She lived in Midland half of her life, and she was always at home here. From the Pickwick Players at Midland Community Theatre to selling raffle tickets among the crowds at Summer Mummers, she did everything with ardent fervor. She was, in everything she undertook, the talented enabler. Those in politics who knew her considered her to be the consummate campaigner. To those who knew her socially, she was a vibrant, articulate, entertaining communicator. And to those who loved her- splendor in all its forms.
Survivors include her husband, J. William Howell of Portland, Texas; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Heck of Midland; her brother, James A. Heck of Austin and his wife, Cathy, and daughters Ellen, Julianna and Margaret; and a brother Douglas G. Heck of Midland and his wife Claire, and their children Adam and Sarah. Also surviving are Michael and Sherry Howell of Rockville, Maryland, Christopher Howell of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Michelle and AbI Temple of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren.
Memorials in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Texas Council of Humanities, Austin, Texas, or the Institute of Asian Cultures in Corpus Christi, Texas, or Pickwick Players of Midland Community Theatre in Midland, Texas, or to anyone's favorite organization.
A memorial service for Linden Heck Howell will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Midland, Texas at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 1999, following a private interment service. The Reverend Frank Fuller of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church of Corpus Christi, Texas will officiate.
