| Flour Bluff's Chanel Lawson stretches for a dig Tuesday night in the Lady Hornets' 15-2, 15-4 triumph over the Lady 'Cats. |
Flour Bluff High School's varsity volleyball team has become accustomed to being the team to beat in district play. According to head coach Keith Johnson, the Lady Hornets still are.
Flour Bluff had no problem handling the role of the favorite Tuesday night at home against Gregory-Portland. The Hornets dismantled the Lady Cats, 15-2, 15-4, in a key match for both teams.
Flour Bluff (21-9, 8-3) will meet Rockport-Fulton (8-3) Saturday for second place in District 31-4A. The Lady Cats (18-12, 7-4) oppose district champion Calallen (11-0) Saturday needing a victory to remain in the playoff race.
Despite Calallen bumping Flour Bluff from its perch as district champion, Johnson said nothing has changed as far as the Lady Hornets are concerned.
"I think we still almost are the team to beat even though Calallen is the favorite coming in," Johnson said. "Everybody's always lost to us (before last season), so they still want to beat us. They want to beat Calallen and they want to beat us. Maybe we're the (Dallas) Cowboys of volleyball around here."
"It just feels like every time we go up against a team," Hornets frontline player Kim Gray said, "they're like 'Flour Bluff, fresh meat.' "
The Lady Cats had the the Lady Hornets in their sights momentarily in Game 1 Tuesday when Amber McWilliams' kill pulled G-P within 3-2.
The Lady Cats wouldn't score again during the game, however, as Flour Bluff recorded 12 unanswered points.
"They came out strong," G-P coach Primo Torres said of the Lady Hornets. "We got stung by the way they came out and just tried to adjust. They had the momentum going on their side and that's hard to stop."
Shoddy defensive play by Gregory-Portland and a perfectly placed dink by Lady Hornets setter Leslie Schwierzke - who notched 21 assists in the match - increased the Flour Bluff lead in the first game to 7-2.
The Bluff's Tonille Todd, who had five kills, then stepped up and produced seven consecutive service points to make it 14-2. After two side-outs and with Chanel Lawson serving, Schwierzke passed to Gray for a game-closing kill.
"We knew G-P was a strong team," said Gray, who had five kills, "and if we let them have any chance or give them any opportunity they would take it and run with it. So we just came out from the beginning and were ready to go win the (match)."
Schwierzke contributed five straight service points and an ace to begin the second game.
Flour Bluff built a 9-1 advantage before G-P's Katie Bram and Gloria Perales combined for three service points and an ace to bring the Lady Cats within 9-4. That was as close at they would come.
