King three-peats as 28-5A district team tennis champ

By George Vondracek
Caller-Times

Not even a shot at avenging a loss during District 28-5A round-robin play was enough to spark Carroll High School.
Ranked 21st in the state, King captured its third straight district team tennis title with a 10-4 victory over the 22nd-ranked Tigers Saturday at the H.E.B. Tennis Center. The score matched the Mustangs' win in round-robin play last month.
"I thought it would fire us up," Carroll coach Bob Mapes said of the earlier loss to King. "Both times, we played 'em close. They just got ahead early in the girls matches, and we lost the mixed doubles, too."
King swept all of the girls doubles matches in addition to the mixed doubles win and also won one of three boys doubles match. That made the task easier in singles play.
"There was a little more pressure because it was the district finals, but I think we had an edge from winning the other match," said King senior Tara Kurtz, whose 6-2, 6-2 win over Kristen Jones in No. 2 singles clinched the Mustangs' win. "So that took a little pressure off."
"I think it gives us a mental edge," King coach Tami Bruce-Romero said of the earlier win over Carroll. "The kids were pumped to do a little better than last time."
Regardless, both squads advance to the Region IV-5A tournament, also at H.E.B., in two weeks.
"We're just going to go the next two weeks and practice hard with a positive attitude," said Kendall Brooks, Carroll's No. 1 player. "We'll probably have to face some tough San Antonio teams like (seventh-ranked) Churchill . But if we play to our potential we can do well and hopefully face King again."
