Rockport lawyer to run for 343rd court

State court covers Aransas, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen and San Patricio counties

Cartwright
Don Cartwright, a Rockport attorney and former state representative, has announced he will run for judge for the 343rd District Court.
Cartwright has worked primarily in criminal law. He seeks the office that the retiring Judge Alonzo Rodriguez has held for nearly 20 years.
"Now it's time to give some back," said Cartwright, who will run as a Republican. "Being a courtroom lawyer, I have the level of temperament it takes to be a judge."
The court serves Aransas, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen and San Patricio counties.
He said that he will move cases through the courts more swiftly and concentrate his efforts on people who sometimes are overlooked.
"We lose track of the victim in criminal law," he said. Cartwright said he plans to insist that restitution to the victim is paid in full and that if a plea is reached, it satisfies the victim.
Cartwright, 59, graduated from Allen Academy in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and received his bachelor's degree from Dallas Baptist University. He attended law school at Texas Wesleyan University and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Besides being elected to the Texas House of Representatives three times, Cartwright is a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas and a member of the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas. He is board president of Dispute Resolution Services, a non-profit organization that provides free or low-cost mediation services for residents of Bee, San Patricio and Nueces counties.
Cartwright also has served on the Aransas County Park Board and the Rockport City Recreation Board. He has been an adjunct faculty member at Del Mar College teaching business law, mediation and real estate courses.
Democrat Janna Whatley already has announced her candidacy for the judgeship. The deadline for filing for the position is Dec. 3.
