Carroll takes second place in district volleyball

By Stu Duncan
Caller-Times

Second place was there for the taking Tuesday night at King High School.
And it didn't take long for King's varsity volleyball team to realize that Carroll has a firm grip on it.
The Lady Tigers took a 10-0 lead in the first game before ousting the Lady Mustangs, 15-1, 15-4, Tuesday. Carroll (5-2 in district), which has beaten King (4-3) twice this season, took sole possession of second place in the District 28-5A race.
Carroll coach Linda Lindsey said second place would be a consolation prize to her team because the Lady Tigers still believe they can claim the district championship.
"We're going to need somebody to step up and beat (undefeated) Miller," Lindsey said. "And we're going to have to win the rest of our games. If that happens, it will be very exciting because we play Miller in the last match of the season."
Carroll sophomore outside hitter Jackie Choi, who contributed a team-high four aces and six assists against King, said the victory was special because the Lady Mustangs are coming off a playoff season.
"It means a lot to us because our goal is to be district champs," Choi said. "This is just a big step because we beat one of the hardest teams in this district. "
Choi helped the Lady Tigers build a 4-0 advantage in the first game when she served four straight service points and two aces.
After an exchange of side-outs, Rebecca Nycum gave the Lady Tigers an 8-0 advantage with four more service points and an ace.
Carroll held a 10-0 lead before King finally broke onto the board with Rhea Skrobarczyk's kill.
After the Lady Tigers regained the serve, Tina Grohman answered with two service points to send Carroll to a first-game victory.
"Our service receive was perfect today," Lindsey said. "When our service receive is good, it enables us to run our offense. Just like when we played Miller (last Friday) - our service receive was horrible, so we couldn't get anything going."
The Lady Mustangs stayed competitive in the second game as Annika Gunning had an ace, Skrobarczyk recorded a block and Wendellene Turner scored two service points to tie the game at 3.
Grohman's ace and Sabrina Mitchell's block of Skrobarczyk enabled the Lady Tigers to take a 7-3 lead. Carroll junior Jennifer Tarske followed with three aces to help the Lady Tigers take control of the match.
Mitchell finished with six kills and four blocks, while teammate Marquita Lewis pounded three kills. Skrobarczyk, who added three blocks, and King's Alexya Gabbard combined for five kills.
