Victoria to consolidate high schools
From staff and correspondent reports
Victoria school trustees elected, 4-3, late Thursday night to consolidate Victoria and Victoria Stroman high schools, possibly creating a District 28-5A powerhouse.
Each school will receive a new name, colors and mascot. The change is expected to take effect during the 2000-2001 school year. Using this year's school population figures, the combination of students attending VHS and Stroman would produce a student body of more than 4,000.
Victoria head football coach Wayne Condra had no comment on the specifics of the consolidation.
The vote comes after a May decision handed down by the Texas Education Agency which declared the Victoria Independent School District was not in compliance with a statewide federal desegregation order, and the schools were racially imbalanced.
In 1998, Stroman had a 68-percent minority population while VHS had 44 percent.
The TEA also said VHS is exceeding its student population capacity while Stroman is being underutilized.
Prior to the consolidation vote, trustee Bobby Trevino made a motion to vote for an east/west school split. That motion failed, 4-3.
Consolidation was one of 12 proposals being voted on by the school board and a Victoria high school enrollment committee. Thirteen of the 15 enrollment committee members reportedly voted for the measure.
