IceRays end losing streak, defeat Wizards 7-6

WACO - No better way to try and end a seven-game losing skid than to play a team who has had just has much trouble winning recently itself.
It worked for the IceRays Saturday, as they won their first game in eight outings by beating Waco, 7-6, in a Western Professional Hockey League Central Division overtime clash Saturday at the Heart 'O Texas Coliseum.
The win snapped the IceRays longest losing streak in franchise history, as the team improved to 8-7-4. Waco, losers of five straight, dropped to 9-7-2.
"It's a tremendous relief," IceRays defensman Greg MacEachern said. "It's nice to get one on the road and hopefully we'll go home and start stringing together some more."
IceRays forward Alain Savage scored the game-winner in overtime, his first game-winner as an IceRay. Corpus Christi goalie Jason Genik blocked three of four shots in the shootout to improve his record to 3-5. Dave Gilmore and Dustin McArthur both had two goals.
For the second night in row an IceRays' defensive lapse led to scoring barrage by their opponents.
This time, however, the IceRays recovered in time to win their first game since Nov. 6.
Corpus Christi led, 2-1, early in the second period when Waco erupted for three goals in 1:19 to give the Wizards a 4-2 lead with 13:24 to play in the seconds period.
The IceRays stood strong, answering with a trio of goals, two by McArthur sandwiched by Kurt Wickenheiser's 12th of the year to take the lead once again, 5-4.
"It was good to see the team battle back," MacEachern said. "We didn't roll over. This was a big win. It would have been tough to go back home and play having not won in eight games. Tomorrow we should come out with a little spunk, hopefully this will get us going."
Waco knotted the game, 5-5, with an Ian Larocque goal, his second of the game, before Gilmore put the IceRays back on top for a fourth time with a goal at the 13:02 mark of the third period.
A John Hughes goal for Waco with 4:28 to play sent the game to overtime.
