On the Javelinas first play from scrimmage, quarterback Lamar Amos connected with running back Ahmad Carter on a screen pass for an 83-yard touchdown. Gregg Johnson's extra point gave A&M-Kingsville a 7-0 lead with 12:16 left in the first quarter.
