Islanders' freshman guard Arnold to transfer from A&M-Corpus Christi
By Mark Zuckerman Caller-Times
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Tra Arnold has quit the Islanders men's basketball team and will likely transfer from the university following the fall semester.
Arnold, a point guard from League City, told head coach Ronnie Arrow that he became discouraged by the prospect of playing for a brand-new Division I basketball program.
"Tra has decided he is not going to be with us," said Arrow, whose team opens its inaugural season next Monday against Eastern Washington. "He thought about it and just decided he wanted to go to a more established program."
Arnold could not be reached for comment Saturday.
A first-team all-district and all-county honoree last year at Clear Creek High School, Arnold was expected to see significant playing time at A&M-Corpus Christi, but had been hampered the last two weeks by a knee injury.
Though he returned to practice earlier this week, Arnold was not in uniform at Wednesday night's exhibition game against Houston Flight, choosing instead to sit in the stands wearing street clothes.
Arrow said the decision was made solely by Arnold, and that he wishes the one-time recruit the best in his attempt to play for another program.
"He's a good kid," Arrow said. "I really thought this was a place he'd have four good years. But we've got a special situation here, starting a new program. It's for some kids and not for some."
Arnold's departure leaves A&M-Corpus Christi with only three freshmen (guard Jonathan Cook and forwards Dustin Shultz and Shaun Hemsley) and four true guards on its roster.
