Waco netminder Todd Laurin (right) makes the save on a shot off the stick of Corpus Christi's Tobin Praznik (20) Saturday in the Wizards' 5-4 victory.
The IceRays lost a hockey game for the fourth consecutive time Saturday, a 5-4 overtime defeat by the Waco Wizards.
The win kept the Wizards' streak alive: They have won four straight.
Corpus Christi scored four goals in the third period and held a 4-2 lead with 6:40 to play but it wasn't enough end the winless streak. The IceRays fell to 8-5-3 while Waco improved to 7-4. Corpus Christi goalie Eddy Skazyk stopped four of seven shooters in overtime but dropped his record to 5-2-2. Waco goalie Todd Laurin stopped five of seven in overtime and 35 in regulation to improve to 7-3. "We called a timeout with eight minutes to go," Waco forward Tony Cimallero said. "We felt, five-on-five, we controlled play all night. We just outbattled them and got some bounces our way."
Roger Lewis had a three-point night in the loss; he scored a goal and had two assists. Dustin McArthur scored a goal and had an assist for Corpus Christi.
IceRays rookie forward Tobin Praznik seemed to skating faster than everyone else on the ice during the scoreless first period. Praznik fired off six shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, three of which occurred while the IceRays were short-handed.
Waco forward Brad Shaver, who has made a living killing the IceRays this season, beat Skazyk with a backhand shot 2:50 into the second period to give the Wizards a 1-0 lead. In three games against the IceRays, Shaver has four goals and three assists - including three power-play goals.
McArthur scored 1:14 into the third period to tie the game, 1-1. It was McArthur's third point of the weekend as he recorded two assists in the IceRays' 5-3 loss at Central Texas Friday. Wingfield and Lewis recorded the assists on McArthur's goal; for Lewis, it was the fourth straight game he had recorded at least one point.
Waco took the lead, 2-1, 2:12 later, on an Ian Larocque goal.
That score didn't last long, either, as the IceRays exploded for two goals within nine seconds just a minute after the Larocque goal.
First it was Wingfield scoring from a Lewis pass to tie the game, 2-2, then Lewis scored a on backhand from the right circle directly off the faceoff at center line to give Corpus Christi a 3-2 lead with 14:22 to play in the game.
Dave Gilmore stretched the IceRays' lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal 12:02 into the third period.
Waco answered with its own explosion, a two-goal burst inside of 35 seconds to tie the game, 4-4, with 6:05 remaining. Dave McIntyre and Tony Cimallero scored the Waco goals.
