Central Texas powers past IceRays, 5-3

Three goals with man advantage lead Stampede

From staff reports

BELTON - Central Texas took full advantage of Corpus Christi penalties Friday night when it scored three power play goals, including the one that clinched it late in the third period and gave the Stampede a 5-3 victory over the IceRays in a Western Professional Hockey League game at the Bell County Exposition Center.
Central Texas improved to 7-4-1 with 15 points in the Central Division with the victory over the division-leading IceRays (8-5-2, 18 points), who play at home tonight against Waco.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the first period when the IceRays played sluggishly, Central Texas found itself in a 3-3 tie early in the third period when Jody Praznick scored off a scramble in front of the Stampede net at 5:21.
The defeat left Corpus Christi 0-4 in games in which it has trailed after the first period.
Central Texas got the advantage back at 8:09 of the third period when Brant Preston got loose on a breakaway and beat Corpus Christi goalie Jason Genik down low.
An IceRays penalty at 17:33 opened it up again for Central Texas and Gerald Tallaire took advantage with the power play goal at 18:24 on assists by Chris Johnston and Jamie Heam.
The Stampede took advantage of some sloppy Corpus Christi defense to skate out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.
The IceRays came into the game having allowed more goals (19) in the first period than any other team this season and Central Texas inflated that statistic on its larger playing surface.
The first goal came when Tallaire held the puck behind the IceRays goal, began to circle in front and flipped it to Johnston who was left alone in front of Jason Genik. Johnston slapped the puck past Genik at 7:42.
The IceRays failed to convert on a power play midway through the period, dropping their 16th-best record in road power play production even lower. Late in the period Central Texas took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play when Aldo Iaquinta, stationed just inside the blue line, drove the puck past Genik, who didn't react to the shot and appeared to have been screened on the play.
That goal came at 18:13 and the Stampede made it 3-0 on another power play at 19:32 when Corpus Christi's Dave Gilmore gave up the puck behind his own goal, Central Texas winger Peter Zurba pounced on it and flipped a pass to Eric Preston who knocked it in.
