Abilene Aviators shoot down Corpus Christi, 4-3

Genik falters on 11th shooter after IceRays comeback

ABILENE - Corpus Christi dropped its first road game of the season Sunday as the Abilene Aviators defeated the IceRays, 4-3, in a shootout, in a Western Professional Hockey League game played at the Taylor County Exposition Center in Abilene.
   IceRays forward Mike Tomlinson scored a game-tying goal with 1:09 to play that sent the game to overtime.
   The shootout went 11 shooters deep before Abilene's Rob Boyko beat Corpus Christi goalie Jason Genik (2-3) for the game-winner.
   The IceRays fell to 8-3-2, 2-1 away from Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi. Abilene won for just the third time; the Aviators snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 3-10.
   Geoff Bumstead scored a goal for Corpus Christi and IceRays rookie defenseman Ryan Esselmont scored his first goal of the year in the loss.
   Abilene forged two first-period leads, but the IceRays answered on both occasions to take a 2-2 tie into the first intermission. Bumstead and Esselmont scored for Corpus Christi in the first period.
   Jean-Francois Gregoire gave the Aviators their third lead, 3-2, early in the second period.
   The one-goal Abilene lead held until the final 1:09 when Tomlinson tied the game, 3-3, sending it to overtime.
