Islanders netters keep it close in exhibition against SMU, 5-4
From staff and correspondent reports
Southern Methodist's Toby Hansson won a three-set singles match over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Stuart Beauchamp to propel the Mustangs to a 5-4 victory over the Islanders in an exhibition tennis match held at H.E.B. Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
The Islanders took an early 2-1 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. The tandem of Beauchamp and Scott Thompson defeated SMU's Hansson and Alexis Rudzinski, 8-6, while Tanner Payne and Eric Von Hellens tallied an 8-6 victory.
SMU, which was ranked as high as fifth nationally during the 1998-99 season, won four of six singles matches to secure the win. The Islanders earned wins from Thompson, who defeated Gerardo Mulas, 5-7, 7-5 (10-8), and Von Hellens, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Ryan Mauck 6-3, 6-4.
"I can't put this match into words," said Islander head coach Steve Moore. "I'm very proud of the guys. They hung in there and battled like warriors against a top-notched team like SMU. Although we still have some work to do, we proved we are capable of being very competitive against nationally ranked opponents."
