Javelinas sign linebacker, defensive back
KINGSVILLE - The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team added two new players to its roster Tuesday, signing Boerne High School standout Casey Freeland and Sacramento City College transfer Torre Watson for the 1999 season.
Freeland, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker at Boerne, earned San Antonio All-City honors and was selected to the San Antonio All-Star team. An All-District 28-4A selection, Freeland recorded 132 tackles as a senior.
Watson, 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back from Sacramento, Calif., was a junior college All-America honoree at Sacramento City College last fall and earned All-Bay Valley Conference honors with the Panthers. He had 14 interceptions as a sophomore.
Freeland and Watson become the 21st and 22nd signees for the Javelinas this year. Five are junior college athletes, one is a senior college transfer and the rest are high school prospects.
Local teams in national volleyball tournament
They're at the big event. And it's the biggest single women's sporting event in the world.
Two area volleyball teams representing the Corpus Christi Volleyball Club are helping comprise a field of 912 teams and 10,210 players this week at Volleyball Festival '99 in Sacramento.
The CCVC 18 Misfits and the CCVC 16's Beach Babes are competing in the tournament which started Monday and finishes Saturday.
The players are competing in front of more than 200 college coaches at the event.
