Simpson trophy melted for jewelry

Gem show will make angel-shaped pins to benefit women's shelter

Associated Press

HOUSTON - O.J. Simpson chastised an evangelist this year for buying one of his old football trophies with the intention of melting it, saying the preacher should have given the money to a women's shelter.
Organizers of a traveling jewelry show believe they've found a way to accomplish both goals.
Friday, they began dismantling and melting Simpson's 1972 American Football Conference Player of the Year trophy, using the metal to make angel-shaped pins. The pins will be free to those who can prove they donated at least $100 to a battered women's program.
The meltdown at this weekend's International Gem and Jewelry Show comes shortly after the five-year anniversary of the slaying of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and waiter Ronald Goldman.
Simpson was acquitted of the killings, but a civil jury ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the families of the victims, prompting the auction of his personal items.
The pins are similar to those worn by Nicole Simpson's sister, Denise Brown, during the former running back's criminal trial. Simpson earned the award while playing for the Buffalo Bills.
A television evangelist bought a public service award at that auction and vowed to melt it into the shape of a knife, the weapon used in the double slaying.
In an interview, Simpson suggested that the preacher should have donated to a women's shelter the $16,000 he paid for the Simpson momentos.
