A&M-CC baseball team brings aboard son of former Rangers' top draft pick
Signing of junior college-standout Ryan Clyde adds pop to Islanders' lineup
From staff and correspondent reports
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has signed power-hitting catcher-third baseman Ryan Clyde to a national letter of intent, Islanders' head coach Hector Salinas said Thursday.
Clyde, 6-foot-3 from Tomball, earned 1999 Region 14 All-Conference honors at Angelina Junior College. As a sophomore, he had a .400 batting average with 15 homers and drove in 68 runs. Both homer and RBI numbers set single-season records at Angelina. Clyde played his freshman year at Lamar University.
"I have worked on signing Ryan since the fall," Salinas said. "Ryan will be a big part of our offense. He's a legitimate Division I player and is capable of turning a game around with one swing of the bat. This is a big catch for our program."
Clyde is the son of former major-league pitcher David Clyde, who was the first pick overall in the 1973 Amateur Draft by the Texas Rangers.
Three CC weightlifters
claim state championships
Corpus Christi's Shary Barbee set two American records last Saturday at the U.S. Powerlifting Federation Senior Nationals in Dallas, leading the charge of three Corpus Christi state titles.
Competing in the women's 90-kilo division, Barbee broke the national record in the bench press (105 kilos) and dead lift (155). She also set state records in the squat (110) and total weight (370).
Barry Shaw set two records in the men's 90-kilo class en route to the state title. Shaw set the deadlift (295) and total weight (755).
Beth Goupil also won a state title in the 67.5-kilo class with a total weight of 387.50 kilos.
At the same meet, Kountze's T.J. Hoerner, the national collegiate champion, set a national deadlift mark with a lift of 272.50 kilos.
Gulf Coast girls split in first day of national event
The Corpus Christi Gulf Coast Girls Fastpitch 14 and Under softball all stars gained a split in their first two games of the Pony National Fastpitch Championship Tournament Thursday in Herrin, Ill.
Behind pitcher Deborah Allen's near perfect game and nine-strikeout performance in a three-inning game, the Gulf Coast team opened with a 20-0 drubbing of Auburn, Ill. The game was called after 1 hours because of the extreme heat conditions.
The Gulf Coast squad managed five hits but dropped the nightcap to the Hart "A" All Stars of Valencia, Calif., 5-0. The team is continuing to play in the five-game round robin tournament.
An all star team from Kingsville is also competing in the same tournament and posted a 1-1 record to begin tournament play.
