Endowment honors philanthropist, funds A&M scholarships

Caller-Times

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President Robert R. Furgason said Saturday that a $10,000 endowment honoring the late Corpus Christi philanthropist Janet Harte will be used to help fund scholarships.
"A scholarship of this kind will make the difference in whether or not (students) can or cannot go on to college," Furgason said. "This is a way to make sure that our future generations are participating in society by being educated and getting the kinds of opportunities that education is the key to."
The Scripps Howard Foundation, on behalf of the Caller-Times, donated the $10,000 to the university.
Janet Harte, along with her husband Edward H. Harte, a former publisher of the Caller-Times, in 1998 donated $3.5 million to A&M-Corpus Christi to help pay for a planned $18 million performing arts building. That year, the couple donated almost $20 million to local, state and national organizations and charities.
