Ethnic Albanians target Russian troops
Russia's ethnic ties to Serbs, official deployment in Kosovo incite protesters
Associated Press
KOSOVSKA KAMENICA, Yugoslavia - Ethnic Albanians taunted Russian peacekeepers and kicked their armored personnel carrier Monday as U.S. troops tried to show the Russians around this village in Kosovo.
"Russians go home!" shouted many of the 1,500 protesters in Kosovska Kamenica, where Russian paratroopers have started setting up an advance base in their first official deployment alongside the NATO-led peacekeeping force.
The protest ended peacefully with no injuries, but it underscored problems the Russians will face with their deployment in Kosovo.
Ethnic Albanians already have protested in parts of the French and German sectors, where Russians are also due to deploy. The Russian contingent is expected to reach 3,600 troops.
NATO has said it hopes the presence of the Russians will make Kosovo's Serb minority feel safer. Many Serbs have fled because of reprisals from returning ethnic Albanian refugees who earlier were targets of a brutal Serbian military crackdown.
