Islanders baseball team signs Lamar transfer, plan to start him at shortstop
From staff and correspondent reports
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team shored up its infield with the signing of Bryan Coleman to an athletic grant-in-aid, coach Hector Salinas announced Friday afternoon.
Coleman, a 1997 graduate of Houston Westfield High School, played eight games for Lamar University during the 1999 campaign. The redshirt freshman tallied two doubles in four at bats, and was a perfect two for two in stolen base attempts. The Cardinals finished with a 34-21 mark.
Coleman is expected to make immediate impact as a starter for the Islanders, who begin their first season of collegiate baseball in 2000.
"Bryan is a super athlete and swings a good stick," Salinas said. "I'm looking for him to be my starting shortstop. He should help us be strong up the middle."
Coleman earned all-district honors for coach Rick Lynch at Westfield after batting .333 with three homers his senior season.
The Coleman announcement brings the Islander squad size to 20.
Gulf Coast All Stars triumph at t-ball sectional tourney
The Gulf Coast All Stars girls tee-ball team breezed through the sectional tournament in Kingsville last weekend and now has focused its attention on the regional title.
The squad posted three victories in as many sectional games, while pounding out an average of 22 runs per outing. The Gulf Coast team - coached by Mike Carreon and assistant Mike Gallardo - upended Brush Country by scores of 24-19, 21-10 and 22-11.
The Gulf Coast All Star squad advances to the regional finals July 9-11 in Austin. The winner of that tournament will move on to the national finals in Burleson.
