Islanders will have to fight without Rocky
A&M-CC women lose top rebounder after she suffers knee sprain in practice
By Matt Young Caller-Times
DELAND, Fla. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team could be in for a rocky road trip. It will definitely be Rocky-less.
A&M-Corpus Christi (6-5) will be without Rocky Grayson on their three-game road trip, which begins at Stetson at noon today. Grayson, the Islanders' starting shooting guard, sprained her knee in practice Tuesday when she banged knees with fellow Islander Jean Clark. While no definite timetable has been set, it appears Grayson, who made the trip with the help of crutches, will miss at least two weeks. That would put her out of action for A&M-Corpus Christi's next six games.
Grayson is the Islanders' leading rebounder and third-leading scorer. Her energy and athletic ability usually give A&M-Corpus Christi a big mismatch at shooting guard.
"Rocky's a player who consistently scores in double figures and grabs double-figure rebounds, so there's no doubt she'll be missed sorely," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "She's such a big contributor in so many different ways, she'll be impossible to replace. That's why I've told the other players that we'll need some of them to step up and fill in for Rocky. No one person will be able to fill the void her injury leaves."
Grayson will be the fifth Islander to miss a game due to injury this season.
Grayson's injury makes the road trip much more interesting for the Islanders, who take on two struggling teams on back-to-back days. Stetson has started slow with a 3-7 record, while Jacksonville, which the Islanders play at noon Friday, began its season with eight straight losses.
A&M-Corpus Christi will get a much tougher test on the road trip's final game when it plays at Oklahoma State on Monday.
Today's game will be the Islanders' first since their 19-point win over Air Force 10 days ago. After taking five days off for Christmas, the players have had four days of practice to prepare for the road trip.
"We've looked pretty good in practice considering the long layoff," Estes said. "Everyone came back in good shape, which is always a concern. They came back and worked hard. They've shown a lot of intensity in practice, so we're pretty encouraged. We're also real eager to get back and play a real game again."
