Univision will ring in the New Year with 24-hour special

'Three Stooges' marathon will feature 24 classic shorts

Along with all the other networks going Y2Krazy, Univision celebrates the New Year with a 24-hour telecast called "Feliz Milenio!" ("Happy Millennium!"). The Spanish-language network goes live starting at 5 a.m. Friday and stays on the air all day and night with performances by some of the biggest Latino performers in the biz.
Scheduled to participate in the big show are Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Placido Domingo, Juan Gabriel, Vikki Carr, Julio Iglesias, Celia Cruz, Shakira, Elvis Crespo, Laura Leon and dozens more. Serving as host of the festivities in Miami is "Sabado Gigante" star Don Francisco.
Throughout the day, as the clock ticks toward midnight, Univision will check in with correspondents in Mexico City, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Phoenix, Orlando and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Univision will greet the 21st century with a special edition of "Despierta America" Saturday at 6 a.m., followed by live coverage of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade at 10 a.m.

American Movie Classics has perhaps the best antidote to millennium mayhem - a "Three Stooges" marathon. Hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, the four-hour event starts at 11 p.m. Friday and includes 24 classic shorts by the masters of slapstick comedy. The films have been digitally remastered, but not edited from their original length.
The Stooges started their act as Moe Howard, his brother Shemp, and Larry Fine, who developed their lowbrow brand of comedy in vaudeville in the 1920s. Shemp was replaced by brother Curly Howard in the 1930s, and Larry, Curly and Moe started their series of two-reelers in 1934. Larry and Moe kept the act going until the 1960s. Shemp eventually returned to replace an ailing Curly. In the 1950s, actors Joe Besser and Joe DeRita (known as Curly Joe) took their turns opposite the two original players.
   November news ratings
No big surprises from the local November sweeps Nielsens. KIII's "Eyewitness News" is still No. 1 at 6 and 10 p.m. The ABC station earned a 17 rating/31 share for its 6 p.m. newscast in November. KRIS' "6 News at 6" was second with a 14 rating/27 share. KZTV's 6 p.m. "Newschannel 10" drew a 1 rating/3 share, lagging behind KORO's telenovela "Sonadoras," which got a 4 rating/7 share. (Each ratings point represents about 1,700 viewers. A share is the percentage of all viewers tuned to TV at that time of day.)
   At 10 p.m., KIII's newscast earned a 21 rating/40 share, followed by KRIS with a 16/31 and KZTV with a 3/6.
Sweeps ratings are measured four times a year and are used by local affiliates to set ad rates.
