Brahmas outlast IceRays

Fort Worth records 8-7 shootout victory

From staff and correspondent reports

FORT WORTH - Goals were plentiful during the Corpus Christi IceRays' Western Professional Hockey League game against the Fort Worth Brahmas Sunday night, as each team scored six in the opening two periods.
Scoring wasn't as easy for the teams during the sudden-death shotoout, however.
After IceRays goalie Jason Genik denied the first six shooters, Fort Worth's Mike Tilson beat Genik for the game-winner during the Brahmas' 8-7 shootout victory against the IceRays at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The IceRays (13-11-6, 32 points) missed an opportunity to pull within a point of the third-place Brahmas (17-10-2, 36 points) in the Central Division standings.
Tilson went around Genik to net the game-winner in the shootout. The goal ruined Genik's efforts in the extra session, which included an impressive stick save against Fort Worth's second shooter, Gatis Tseplis.
Fort Worth goalie Al Rooney proved too much in the shootout. Rooney stopped all seven Corpus Christi shooters and received a break when Corpus Christi's Todd Norman couldn't get a clean shot off after he appeared to beat Rooney on his attempt.
During regulation, Lane Roland scored his first goal as an IceRay eight minutes into the third period to help his team overcome a 5-3 deficit in the second period. Roland went top-shelf above Rooney to give Corpus Christi its second lead of the game, 7-6.
That lead lasted until Tseplis scored his third goal of the game, with 3:07 remaining. Tseplis' power-play goal tied the game at 7 and set up the dramatic conclusion.
Earlier, Fort Worth's Stephane Larocque, who also had a hat trick, scored a power play goal to give the Brahmas a 5-3 second period advantage. The Ice Rays' Kurt Wickenheiser followed with two goals, one coming on a power play, to tie the game at 5. The goals were Wickenheiser's 23rd and 24th of the season and his fifth in two games.
Later, Genik made two saves but he couldn't stop a third shot on a rebound attempt, which gave the Brahmas a 6-5 lead.
That wouldn't last, as the Ice Rays' Bob Quinnell tipped in his second goal of the season nearly four minutes later. Tobin Praznik assisted on Quinnell's goal, which tied the game at 6.
The IceRays scored the game's first goal on a power play 1:57 into the game.
Tobin Praznik received a pass from Wickenheiser and scored to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead. It was Praznik's 21st goal of the season. Larocque scored twice in an 11-second span of the first period to give the Brahmas a brief 2-1 lead.
Corpus Christi's Geoff Bumstead knotted the score at 2 with 5:06 remaining in the first period. Bumstead, who has 15 goals, also extended his consecutive assist streak to 14 games.
The Brahmas broke a tie with two goals in a 34-second span of the first period to grab a 4-2 advantage.
The IceRays responded 21 seconds into the second period when Jody Praznik scored from the blue-line after receiving a screen from Wickenheiser to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The IceRays will continue their road trip Tuesday when they travel to Monroe to play the Moccasins at 7:05 p.m.
