IceRays get by Wizards minus Robo
Rookie Praznik records first hat trick of season, helping team win 5-2
From staff and correspondent reports
WACO - Twenty-five hours after hearing their teammate, Chris Robertson, tell them he had quit the team, the Corpus Christi IceRays went out and won a hockey game.
IceRays rookie forward Tobin Praznik led the way with the team's first hat trick of the season, and the IceRays defeated Waco, 5-2, Sunday at the Heart O' Texas Coliseum. Robertson, last season's Western Professional Hockey League Most Valuable Player, told the IceRays he was not returning to the team at 6 p.m. Saturday before the team left for Waco. Robertson was injured in the first game of the season (on Oct. 13), and was scheduled to come of the injured-reserve list and play for the first time since the injury Sunday.
The IceRays won without Robertson, improving to 12-10-4. Waco dropped to 10-14-2 with the defeat. Praznik scored the game's first two goals and added his third 6:36 into the third period. With the three goals, Praznik now leads the IceRays with 18. Corpus Christi goalie Jason Genik recorded 48 saves on the way to improving to 5-6-2. Besides playing without Robertson, Corpus Christi skated without Mike Tomlinson, Dave Gilmore, Kevin Holliday and Alain Savage, all of whom were out with injuries.
Tony Cimallero scored both goals for Waco.
IceRays veteran forward, Kurt Wickenheiser, recorded three assists, driving his season total to 17 and Geoff Bumstead, playing with two broken hands, scored a goal and had an assists to give him 41 points for the season.
Bumstead has played the last two games with chipped knuckle in his right hand and a broken bone in his left, both resulting from fights.
Still in fourth place in the WPHL Central Division, the IceRays are off until Friday when the team travels to Arkansas.
