'Rays game in Abilene postponed
Ownership issues force league to alter schedule
By Mark Button Caller-Times
Today's Corpus Christi game at Abilene has been postponed because of the lack of ownership issues with the Aviators.
There is no word of a makeup date yet, according to an IceRays press release issued prior to Friday's game.
"The league is still working with Abilene on a way to keep the Aviators in business for this season, however because of the time frame, the league decided that this weekend's games in Abilene should be postponed until this matter is resolved," the release stated.
Fort Worth's game at Abilene Friday was postponed as well.
Western Professional Hockey League officials met Friday with potential new owners from Abilene, said Steve Cherwonak, league director of scheduling and media services. "The meetings today are best defined as productive and encouraging, which are a lot better words than I was using yesterday," Cherwonak said. "Based upon the indication we received from the local ownership group, we are not at the point with Abilene that we are going to cancel the rest of the season."
Cherwonak said while the news is positive, it does not mean that Abilene is a sure bet to finish the season.
"We certainly haven't given up hope," Cherwonak said. In its four-year existence, the WPHL has not had a franchise fold for any reason.
Abilene is 6-16-4 on the season and ranks 16th in the WPHL for average attendance at 1,976.
