Area all-star softball teams beat squads from four states to claim national title

After storming through sectional, regional and national tournaments, two Gulf Coast Girls All Star softball teams can finally claim they're No. 1.
   The 7-8-year-old Gulf Coast Stars - associated with the Gulf Coast Southside Girls Fastpitch League - earned a national championship in the Pinto Division by compiling a 14-1 overall record and outscoring their opponents, 174-80. The 5-6-year old Gulf Coast All Star Girls from the Shetland Division also captured the national title in its 12-team division recently.
   Seventy-four teams from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and California were invited to the national tournament.
   The 7-8-year-old Gulf Coast Stars won sectional and regional tournaments in Kingsville and Austin respectively, before venturing to the nationals in Burleson. The squad posted a 6-1 record there and the Stars avenged an earlier loss by upending Chalmelte, La.'s St. Benard in the national championship game, 9-6.
   This Gulf Coast 7-8 All Star national championship team included: Heather Aleman, Megan Thompson, Moiselle "Moise" Gonzalez, Miranda Flores, Valerie Felan, Bianca Casares, Adriana Casarez, Christian "Cat" Lira, Audrey Gonzalez, Michelle "Mimi" Gonzalez, Samantha Jeter and Jessica Galvan. The coaching staff included: manager Jesse Flores and coaches Rick Gonzalez, Homar Gonzalez, Joey Gonzalez, Debbie Gonzalez and bus manager Patricia Gonzalez.
   The 5-6 Gulf Coast All Star Team included: Leslie Carreon, Alexandra Johnson, Courtney Hammitt, Audriana Mendiola, Sarah Rodriguez, Alyssa Vara, Mariena Gallardo, Kimberly Garcia, Samantha Gonzales, Savannah Hunt, Melanie Cavazos, Ariel Alvarez, Celina Gonzalez and Paige Duke. The coaches were: manager Michael Carreon, coach Michael Gallardo and bus manager Denise Hunt.
   Bohling named Islanders' first head athletic trainer
   Mark Bohling has been named athletic trainer at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, athletics director Dan Viola announced on Wednesday.
   Bohling, 30, comes to the Islanders after two years as head trainer and compliance coordinator at Arkansas-Monticello.
   A native of Greenfield, Iowa, Bohling earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with emphasis in athletic training from Iowa State in 1992, and a master's degree in human performance with emphasis in sports administration from Southern Mississippi in 1994.
   Bohling will develop the Islanders' training program from scratch. The A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's basketball teams begin play as Division I independents in November.
   Women's Distance Festival set for Saturday morning
   More than 150 women will take to the streets of downtown Corpus Christi Saturday for the 10th annual Women's Distance Festival.
   The 5K run begins at 7:30 with the 5K walk starting at 7:35. The start/finish line is located at 309 N. Water St., in front of the Water Street Seafood Company Restaurant.
   Packet pick up will be at Fleet Feet Sports, 514 Everhart Rd. near Alameda, on Friday, August 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fee is $18. All proceeds go to the Corpus Christi Roadrunners Club, a non-profit organization which donates thousands of dollars annually to Coastal Bend charities.

   Ex-Calallen stars named grad assistants at Trinity
   Corpus Christi natives Alex Doran and Matt Moehrig were named graduate assistant coaches at Trinity University, the school announced Wednesday.
   Doran, an All-District member of the 1993 Calallen state semifinal squad, will coach defensive backs. Moehrig, also an All-District honoree from Calallen, will coach the Tigers' defensive line.
